Who are you? And just why are you called ShopAKEMI? (pronounced "ah-keh-mee"!) "Akemi" means "bright and beautiful" in Japanese. We wanted to fill our store with gifts that would intrigue and delight and live up to our name!

We are a family owned and operated company that has been involved in a variety of retail and wholesale businesses for many years. As Asian Americans, we enjoy purchasing gifts that appeal to us as Americans, but with an Asian accent. We look for things that are not too fussy, but display a clarity of design and a serenity of purpose. Hopefully you will discover something here that will make you feel right at home and at peace with yourself and your world.

Our company philosophy is pretty straightforward and simple:

We love bringing you the most unique items we can find, and at a fair price that you can appreciate. We strive to be a socially responsible company. We feel it is important to pay our artisans and craftspeople a fair price for their excellent quality products. By doing this, the people who create the products that bring you joy can continue to do just that!

We also feel that it is our privilege and responsibilty to give back to our community and the world at large. Whenever, and wherever possible, we will sell environmentally responsible goods. Our signature SHOPAKEMI.COM tote bag was specifically designed to help eliminate the over-use of plastic bags. Light weight, but strong and durable, our SHOPAKEMI.COM tote bag has a lifespan equal to 1500 plastic bags!

Additionally, when we contemplated offering gift wrapping, we felt that it was important to try to cut down on paper waste. Consequently, we deliberately chose to offer our customers a fabric gift bag that could be used for other purposes once the gift was opened.

You may be interested to know that we enthusiastically support the good works of many community organizations. Every year we donate a portion of our annual profits to one or more of them. This year, we have chosen to give to:
